Arch of the Flemish from the Triumphal Entry of Philip III into Lisbon, 1619

Published in Joao Baptista Lavanha, "Viagem da Catholica Real Magestade del Rey D. Felipe II N. S. ao Reyno de Portugal." (Madrid: Thomas lunti, 1622), after fol. 37. This image from a Spanish book was created for a visit by Philip III of Spain to Lisbon. It depicts the eastern facade of the Arch of the Flemish (or Netherlanders), and is the source of the motif of the central field of an embroidered wall hanging created in West Bengal specifically for export to Portugal. The embroidery is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (accession number: T20e4).
