Monument to the Duke of Alba in the citadel of Antwerp

The statue was originally executed by Jacques Jonghelinck, and put on display in the port city of Antwerp in 1570. Raised on the orders of the duke himself, it depicted him as a military leader and destroyer of false religion. Galle's engraving of the Alva monument dates to the period immediately following its erection, and is all that remains of the Jonghelinck work. Alva is shown in full armor, with the vanquished powers lying at his feet.
