International audience ; This paper constitutes an introduction to the history of the Société géologique du Nord and of Earth sciences in northern France. The Society was founded in 1870, with Jules Gosselet as first president. It has always been closely connected to the geology department of the Faculty of Sciences of Lille, now called Lille 1 University, and keeps strong links with the Natural History Museum of Lille. Its activities and evolution were closely related to those of the coal-mining basin of the region until the last shaft was closed on 1990. Its activities are both in the fields of applied and fundamental geology. From its beginning, the Society publishes the results of the works of its members both in a periodical journal, the Annales, and as monographies called Mémoires. From the 1970s, the Memoirs have been progressively replaced by Publications, mostly devoted to doctorate theses. During the transition from the 20th to the 21st Century, the activities of the Society have strongly declined, due to several internal and external factors. It is still a scientific society, but is open to its social environment.
