Robert Campin was a leading figure in the city of Tournai during the early fifteenth century and scholars now generally agree that he is the artist known as the Master of Flémalle. Campin's career flourished in the new bourgeois environment, and he was both head of the painter's guild and a member of the stewards of the city, who were in charge of the accounts and finances of Tournai. Robert Campin was a leading figure in the city of Tournai during the early fifteenth century and scholars now generally agree that he is the artist known as the Master of Flémalle. Campin's career flourished in the new bourgeois environment, and he was both head of the painter's guild and a member of the stewards of the city, who were in charge of the accounts and finances of Tournai. This small triptych, recently rediscovered, is an example of Campin's early style. The central panel depicts the Entombment of Jesus Christ, and is flanked, to the left, by the donor kneeling below two thieves still hanging on crosses at Golgotha, and, to the resurrected Christ emerging from his tomb. The bulky figures withtheir twisting, heavy, and colorful drapery, some with their backs turned, are typical features of Campin's works. The flattened space and abstracted background make the realism a bit rough; yet, Campin masterfuly captures the emotionality of the Entombment, with such details as the mourning faces and the angel tenderly brushing a tear from his own cheek.
