International audience ; This paper constitutes an introduction to the history of the Société géologique du Nord and of Earth sciences in northern France. The Society was founded in 1870, with Jules Gosselet as first president. It has always been closely connected to the geology department of the Faculty of Sciences of Lille, now called Lille 1 University, and keeps strong links with the Natural History Museum of Lille.
