Trends in genome-wide and region-specific genetic diversity in the Dutch-Flemish Holstein–Friesian breeding program from 1986 to 2015

A paper produced in the frame of the H2020 project 677353 'Innovative Management of Animal GEnetic resources' Gene bank samples kept from 1986 to 2015 were used to study the trends in genome-wide inbreeding and kinship and corresponding effective population sizes. This revealed major changes due to the breeding program: the use of Optimal Contribution Selection indced a drop in inbreeding whereas the rate of inbreeding increased substantially after the onset of Genomic Selection (GS).
