In the late 15th and early 16th centuries the first printed editions of a series of literary prose works known as the chivalrous novels appeared across most of Europe, including editions in Spanish and Dutch. Their origins can be traced back to the European fictional literature of previous centuries. The role of the printing press was crucial in this development and determined issues such as the choice of texts and versions, depending on the publisher's intentions and readers' expectations.
