Deed for three lots purchased at auction, 1827

Deed for three lots sold at auction by order of the Orphans Court, to furnish funds for the settlement of the estate of Aaron Devoe, who died intestate. Lots were purchased by Jacob D. Van Winkle. In the years following the incorporation of "The City of Jersey" in 1820, canny investors began amassing property in the surrounding areas in anticipation of the city's growth. By 1873 Bergen, Hudson City, and Greenville had become part of (The City of) Jersey City, and the Dutch farming community was becoming an industrial center.
