India

Aurangzeb attempted to establish Mughal power in southern India. However he came up against foes - in particular the Marathas - whom he could do little to contain. From the 1680s Maratha armies broke through the Mughal cordon meant to contain them and ravaged far and wide. The Europeans, who had established trading posts around the coast, were mere observers of events at this time.
