Covered Ewer: Separate inner vessel

Separate inner vessel ; In 1613 Paulus van Vianen, the celebrated silversmith, died in Prague. His death was mourned by many. The Amsterdam silversmith's guild commissioned a memorial jug to commemorate the great artist. For the commission they selected Paulus's brother, the Utrecht silversmith Adam van Vianen. Adam van Vianen drew inspiration from the auricular ornament which had been his brother's trademark. Instead of limiting the auricular style to the decoration, the whole object became one large auricular lobe. (http://www.rijksmuseum.nl)
