View of Via Panisperna, looking towards Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome

Many artists traveled from the Netherlands to Italy in the 16th century. A particular favorite for those looking for classical remains was Rome. One artist who stayed in Rome for a while was Gerard ter Borch the Elder. Often he focused on more than just the ancient ruins, as this drawing shows.
