Identified by Gary Schwartz as "Tamerlane pursuing Bayazet outside Constantinople," but there is actually no such scene described in "Tamerlane," the melodrama by Joannes Serwouters of 1657. The romantic and enigmatic character of this picture has inspired many theories about its subject, meaning, history, and even its attribution to Rembrandt.
