Entrance to a Dutch Port

In 1672 the artist and his father, Willem van de Velde the Elder, moved from Amsterdam to England, where they were awarded pensions from Charles II and the duke of York. This picture dates from the early Dutch period, about 1665, but it is already remarkably mature in its balance between meticulous draftsmanship and broad effects of daylight and atmosphere.
