Reptiles

In 1936, when Spain was on the verge of civil war, the graphic artist M. C. Escher visited Granada and became absorbed in a study of the Alhambra's intricate ornamentation. His famous illusionistic puzzle "Reptiles" (1943) reflects his fascination with the way in which each ornamental line delineates both an inner and an outer space.
