Kraaikop

Bowl, called kraaikop, with high, molded sides and upturned, lobed rim. This bowl is from the wreckage of a Dutch ship called the Witte Leeuw (White Lion), which sank off the coast of St. Helena in the South Atlantic, in 1613. The ship had been lost on her return voyage from the East Indies. Discovered by Dr. Robert Stenuit in 1976, its excavation yielded detailed information about many early pieces of Chinese export porcelain. Many of these pieces now belong to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
