Houses on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam

Although a 17th century drawing, this is a good representation of medieval Amsterdam. The buildings were of wood, which allowed lighter construction on the soft soil. After the fire of 1452, when two thirds of the houses burned, side walls had to be in masonry.
