Diagram of palette from letter

From Letter 222, van Gogh, "The Complete Letters", vol. 1, 1958. Van Gogh's drawing of his palette in 1882 shows nine colors, running tonally and quite conventionally from white at the thumbhole to vermilion, placed unusually beyond black. Vincent described it as, "a practical palette with healthy colors. Ultramarine, carmine, and the like are added when strictly necessary."
