Innovation, institutions and migration: transfer of technology in Dutch shipbuilding, 500-1700

This paper focuses on innovation in shipbuilding. The central question is by what mechanisms innovation took place. Was new technology locally invented or was it transferred, from the outside, as exogamous knowledge? How did technology transfer work? Two main strands of reasoning will be followed. The tainted concept of migration will be revitalised. In addition, the role of guilds will be analysed. The role of guilds is crucial for understanding the system of the tramping journeyman, implying the sharing of new tacit knowledge. The step-by-step development of shipbuilding technology was stimu... Mehr ...

The step-by-step development of shipbuilding technology was stimulated by the guild system of transferring knowledge.
