II. Pondichery under the Dutch (1693-1699)

On September 7, 1693, Pondicherry fell into the hands of the Dutch and remained five and a half years in their possession (until March 1699). During that period, they tried to develop the settlement into a great manufacturing centre. First, with the agreement of Raja Ram, the ruler of Senji, they enlarged the territory under their control.
