peer reviewed ; Through the well-known drama of soldiers shot as a warning to others, "Paths of Glory" seemed an angry denunciation of the French army, in spite of Kubrick’s statement that his real aim was any form of militarism. Issued in 1958, the film was not distributed in France, then in the midst of the Algerian conflict. Through pressures, demonstrations and threats, some Frenchmen and French sympathizers tried – in vain – to extend the ban to Liege and Brussels screens. They provoked in turn vigorous reactions, which extended far outside the traditional antimilitarist circles. French-speaking Belgium, invoking freedom of expression, refused to be treated as a French cultural or political protectorate.
