Een nobele onbekende: de kleine gaper Sphenia binghami Turton, 1822 (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Myidae)

The authors report the find of juvenile Sphenia binghami Turton, 1822 attached to the shell of a common wentletrap Epitonium clathrus (Linnaeus, 1758) caught alive during September 1975 off De Panne, Belgium. The specimens were attached with their byssus in the suture between the body whorl and the penultimate whorl. S. binghami is thought to be rare in Belgian marine waters but recent research revealed that the species is not uncommon in suitable habitats such as the fouling communities (mussel, hydroids, Pomatoceros reefs…) on buoys, wrecks and boulders.
