Backgrounds of the 1890-1891 legislation and the influence on the education of natural sciences in Belgium The legislation of 1890-1891 strongly improved the quality of the education in natural sciences at the Belgian Universities. Already in 1876 a temporary arrangement was found for the reorganization of the educational system, which, however, was only finalized with the legislation of 1890-1891. The main issues in the debates concerning the problems of university education since the Belgian independence are briefly summarized, together with the proposed solutions. The problems concerning the educational organization at the Faculties of Sciences were however more closely related to the objective of the training given, and had in fact a more fundamental character. Also following the influence of examples set in other countries, and more specifically inspired by the German system, Belgian legislation promulgated in 1890-1891 revalued the research of the Faculty of Sciences, which had a fruitful impact on the level of the education in the natural sciences.
