Competitive conditions in the Belgian banking sector between 2002 and 2008

The goal of this paper is to characterize the nature of competition in the Belgian banking sector between 2002 and 2008. In the first part of the paper, we compute some key structural indicators, including the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. In the second part, we apply the Panzar – Rosse (1987) methodology. We follow Matthews, Murinde et Zhao (2007) who published a comparable study for the British banks, by using a panel of 12 banks over the 2002-2008 time period.
