International audience ; The beginning of geological research in Belgium is linked to the Austrian Period (1714-1790) and especially to the personal interest of our governor Charles of Lorraine who owned a curiosity cabinet and was surrounded by eminent scientists. The Imperial Academy of Brussels was created by Maria- Theresa of Austria in 1772 and the members invited to work on applied research. J.-B.-J. d'Omalius d'Halloy, known as the "father of the Belgian geology" started his long career during the French Empire. During the brief Dutch period (1815-1830) a comity was erected to prepare a Geological map and chairs of geology and mineralogy were created in the universities. The Royal Academy sollicitated memoirs on the geological constitution of our provinces. A first geological map of Belgium was produced by André Dumont (1849) and after his death; a proposal was made to make a detailed geological map of our country. After this proposal, a long lasting crisis started between Belgian geologists which caused the creation of a new Geological Survey and the splitting into two Geological Societies.
