In most African sub-Saharan colonies, Africans were forbidden to consume distilled liquor. In the Belgian Congo, the prohibition encouraged, after World War II, the emergence of an illicit drinking culture taken over by urban women traffickers. In Leopoldville, the capital city, these women faced an intensified and severe repression made visible by police arrests and court convictions.
