510 - THE TWICE-MONTHLY BULLETIN FOR PAY AND BENEFITS SPECIALISTS - Public sector pay in 2000-01 - Staff shortages and ail impending general election may encourage the Government to relax its grip on public sector pay., but higher increases are likely to be targeted at certain jobs and locations rather than paid across the board. Our annual review details the settlement levels awarded to the major public sector employees in the 2000-01 wage round, reviews the recent submissions to the pay review body awards effective in April 2001 and looks at some of the key developments relating to future pay and grading arrangements including: the introduction of performance -related pay for classroom teachers in England and Wales and details of the Government's biggest-ever teacher recruitment drive; the "winter of discontent' in higher education following the employer's refusal to implement the recommendations of the Bett report: the measures introduced to improve the speed of pay progression for civil servants covered by merit reviews; the ongoing implications of the single-status agreement in local government; and the progress to date on the Government's Agenda for Change in the NHS.
