Managing redundancy at Bradford & Bingley - We examine how the UK's second-largest building society - due to float on the London Stock Exchange on 4 December 2000 - managed the redundancy programme when it closed one of its head offices this year with the loss of 275 jobs. Our case study tracks the closure of the society's Leamington Spa office., from the initial announcement in October 1999 to the end of operations in March 2000. We look at the society's use of: outplacement consultants - brought in to assist workers find new employers or alternative employment within Bradford & Bingley; a counselling service - to help staff cope with the stress of being made redundant and looking for new work; and management consultants - to train line managers to give bad news and deal with reactions to it.
