Managing traumatic stress in the workplace - Employers must take steps to manage the impact of traumatic and violent experiences on employees. Noreen Tehrani, who has provided trauma management services to employees affected by the Paddington rail crash and the Manchester IRA bomb, describes employers' responsibilities and takes a took at organisational trauma care programmes. The organisational cost of traumatic stress can be high and is paid for in increased levels of sickness absence, medical retirements and costly litigation. The need to deal with the psychological impact of tramna in a systematic way has prompted some organisations to introduce trauma care programmes. As Noreen Tehrani explains, the type of programme chosen depends very much on the organisational culture of the employer concerned.
