Managing disability, part 2 - New ways to manage disability - In the second part of our special issue, we focus on a major survey of employer approaches to managing disability, conducted in two waves by IRS Management Review and IRS Employment Trends in March and May 2000 - based on responses from 160 employers. Main findings include: 137 respondents say their organisations have a formal policy on the employment of disabled people - this amounts to 86% of the employers surveyed; personnel and human resources departments continue to play the leading role in establishing the employer's approach to the employment of disabled people in more than 90% of the organisations with a formal policy; and more employers cite the promotion of equal opportunities and the elimination of barriers to employing the best person for the job as the most important considerations when introducing a policy, than refer to the need to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
