A rounded view - According to its enthusiastic advocates, 360-degree feedback is the only means of comprehensively revealing how successful an individual is in all their important work relationships. Traditional appraisal falls to the line manager, but the 360-degree variety derives its information from subordinates, peers, managers, customers and self-assessment. Among the advantages claimed for this approach also called multirater feedback or full-circle appraisal - is that it fits with the vogue for putting responsibility for personal and professional development on to the individual. According to the theory, providing an individual with feedback from those around them will promote self-awareness and lead to improved performance. Supporters of the technique also claim that it can increase motivation, improve teamworking and communication, and lead to a more supportive environment in the workplace. We put these claims to the test with case studies of a local authority and an accountancy firm.
