FEATURES - Effective selection tools: adapt and survive - In the second report in our new series on effective selection techniques, we turn our attention to the ways that selection is changing in response to business and marketplace pressures. We have chosen three diverse employers to illustrate the responses to such pressures. Our case study of Computer Cab reflects some of the issues connected with the new service economy. It faces constaiit challenges to recruit specialists in IT and communications engineering, and staff for its call centre. At Lancashire County Council, the size and geographical spread of its 37,000-strong workforce presents particular recruitment and selection challenges. It needed to find ways of responding to an audit inspection of these practices that balanced the need for conformance to minimum standards with the desire to allow local flexibility. Finally, Pet Plan is a fast-growing insurance company with a demand for staff that must be satisfied from already tight labour markets. Pet Plan has also undergone significant organisational change, including the decentralisation of recruitment to line managers.
