Workplace bullying in Britain - Some two million employees have been subject to bullying over the past six months, a tenth of the UK workforce. Among these "currently bullied" workers, one in seven report that they are exposed to bullying on a daily or weekly basis. In this special feature for EHB, Helge Hoel and Cary L Cooper of the Manchester School of Management present their new evidence on the prevalence of workplace bullying in the UK. Their study, the largest of its kind in the LTK, surveyed 5,228 employees in 70 public and he private sector organisations. The authors describe the experience of bullying, profile es its perpetrators and describe the differing frequencies across occupational and industrial groups. They feature the 12 most common negative acts", including types of personal derogation and work-related harassment. Among coping strategies, victims of bullying most frequently discuss their experiences with work colleagues, or with friends and family. The authors remark that, with only a minority taking their case to a trade union or personnel officer, employers and unions have a considerable way to go to establish themselves as reliable sources of support.
