Living with the 48-hour week - Last year, the Department of Trade and Industry commissioned IRS Research, the contract research arm of Industrial Relations Services, to provide an assessment of the initial impact of the Working Time Regulations 1998. A report containing the results of the first stage of the research has been published. Here, we present an edited version of the study's findings on one of the central aspects of the new working time regime: the 48-hour maximum average working week. We look at how 20 carefully selected case-study employers have: defined "working time"; ensured compliance with the 48-hour maximum; and reformed working practices in the light of the new rules.
