A view from the workplace - We take a look at some of the findings of the latest Workplace Employee Relations Survey (WERS) - the UK's preniier employment survey, which is fully representative of all but the smallest workplaces in Britain. Our review focuses on three aspects of the research that are of interest to personnel and HR practitioners: in most multi-workplace organisations, responsibility for personnel policy remains at the centre - it has not been devolved down the line-management hierarchy; high-commitment management practices - such as problem-solving teams, formal off-the-job trahiing and regular appraisals - are associated with better financial performance, higher productivity and lower labour turnover; and the most successful workplaces are those where high-commitment management practices are "well embedded in the labour process" and where a high proportion of employees feel committed to the organisation.
