Stretching flexible workers - In an overview for practitioners, we review some of the major research undertaken on employee responses to the flexible-working revolution - including the Government-funded Workplace Employee Relations Survey, and studies from the Trades Union Congress, the Institute of Personnel and Development, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and recruitment firm TMP Worldwide. Our summary 'of the evidence suggests that employees' views of flexible working are heavily determined by their own circumstances, but that workers are generally positive about arrangements that improve work-life balance and give genuine choice. By contrast, employees tend to be suspicious of those flexible-working arrangements they perceive to be unfairly skewed towards the interests of their employers. We conclude that employers are increasingly taking this into account in designing, implementing and communicating flexible-working initiatives.
