Policing cyberspace - Use of e-mail and the internet at work has soared in recent years, yet many employers have only a limited awareness of their legal liabilities arising from computer use. Equally, Employees are largely ignorant of their rights and responsibilities in relation to the new communications technologies in the workplace. Our first review of employers' e-mail and internet policies is based on information from 74 employing organisations, all of which either have a policy on the issue or plan to introduce one soon. We look at the areas covered by the policies, and examine the changes that can be expected in the coming months. Our findings include: 73% of respondents allow employees personal use of e-mail and-or the internet, usually within clearly defined limits; the content of policies varies widely - while 80% of policies cover the downloading of viruses, only 34% deal with the issue of online contracts; and 35% of the IRS panel plan to change their policy to tighten up on a range of concerns, including monitoring e-mail and internet use, and issues raised by new legislation.
