Virgin and Child in an Interior

A false Durer monogram is crudely scratched on to the reverse of the panel. The Virgin and Child are seated in a richly appointed interior, appropriate to their divine status: the bench is hung with cloth of gold and the floor inset with precious stones. But they are also mother and child: the brass basin by the fire is for bathing the Child; clean nappies and swaddling clothes are in the basket lower right.
