This work investigated the possibility of registering a Geographical Indication (GI) for soapstone in the region of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais. A conceptualization of industrial property was made, its influence on the development of the region, which is recognized, and a survey on which laws and bodies are competent to grant a GI. Through studies on the traditionality, quality and typicality of soapstone, data were collected that would reflect the potential of the region to become a GI. With documentary research it was possible to discuss and verify the viability and obstacles for the registration of an indication of origin in the region. ; Este trabalho buscou investigar a possibilidade de registrar uma Indicação Geográfica (IG) para pedra-sabão, na região de Ouro Preto, no Estado de Minas Gerais. Foi feita uma conceituação da propriedade industrial, sua influência no desenvolvimento da região em que é reconhecida e um levantamento sobre quais leis e órgão são os competentes para outorgar uma IG. Por meio de estudos sobre a tradicionalidade, a qualidade e a tipicidade da pedra-sabão, levantou-se dados que traduzissem as potencialidades da região em se tornar uma IG. Com uma pesquisa documental, foi possível discutir e verificar a viabilidades e os entraves para o registro de uma indicação de procedência na região.
