European activity ; By the mid 17th century the Dutch had come to dominate Asian trade, taking over Portuguese positions around the Indian ocean, especially in southwest India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Further east they founded their own trading capital at Batavia (Jakarta), which dominated the Indonesian archipelago. The Spanish established trade routes across the Pacific between the Philippines and their American colonies.
