Historians have shown a great deal of interest over the past two decades in how expressions of power might be “read” in the urban landscape of the Burgundian Netherlands, whether one is thinking of the power of the city itself, of groups within it such as guilds and confraternities, or authorities with wider ambitions, notably the church and the princely state.
