A discarded metaphore. On the history of the conflict between belief and science, in particular in the Netherlands Few historians nowadays hold that there is an inescapable conflict between science and belief. Nevertheless, this discarded metaphore is still used as a conceptual scheme for directing the study of the relationship between science and belief. As an introduction to this special issue of Gewina, we discuss some of the problems related to this metaphore, especially in relation to the history of science in the Netherlands.
