Dust concentrations in Dutch brickworks and the efficiency of measures to reduce exposure to dust were investigated in four representative works. The project consisted of three parts. In Part 1 total and respirable dust and respirable quartz dust were measured before control measures were recommended or taken. The dust concentrations were in many cases too high; the respirable quartz dust concentration was most critical. Recommendations were made for the introduction at short notice of simple control measures and good housekeeping rules. The works were investigated again a year later to assess the effect of the recommendations (Part 2). The concentrations had decreased considerably in some cases where the recommendations were followed. Part 3 describes the experiment with nozzles that generate a fine water mist to moisten dusty surfaces and so reduce dust levels. These nozzles reduced respirable dust concentrations to 0.5 mg m−3 or less, which is acceptable.
